Miley Cyrus' Mysterious VMAs Date Is Wanted By the Police

Miley Cyrus made a big splash at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night, when she dispatched a young homeless man to accept her Video of the Year top prize. The man, who only identified himself as "Jesse" delivered an impassioned speech on behalf of others who have lived on the streets.

But today, the good vibes are beginning to dissipate, as we learn more about Jesse Helt, 22, and his criminal past.

1. Jesse's Troubled Past: Helt hails from Salem, Oregon, where he attended West Salem High School and received his GED through Chemeketa Community College, his mother, Linda, told the Oregonian newspaper. She said her son had been homeless a few times after relocating from Salem to Los Angeles, where he wanted "to make it on his own" as a model. Once, Linda recalled, Jesse called home to tell her, "I'm living in a bush."

Jesse Helt, however, has a troubled past: a warrant for his arrest was issued in Oregon, the Polk County Circuit Court confirmed Tuesday to The Insider With Yahoo. Between October 2010 and November 2011, Helt was convicted of trespassing in the first degree, sentenced to 12 months of supervised probation, 88 hours of community service, and ordered to complete training. Additionally, he was convicted of criminal mischief in the third degree and was sentenced to 30 days in jail for that charge.

In April 2011, the county district attorney filed a motion to revoke his probation after Helt failed to report to his probation officer, declined to submit a urine analysis, used controlled substances, didn't complete his community service or court-ordered classes. The judge approved a warrant, ordering Helt to back to court, and later continued his probation. In August 2011 and again in November of that year, the judge issued separate motions to revoke Helt's probation for repeated failure to meet the terms set by the court. Helt has yet to return to the Polk County court.

2. He and Cyrus Are Fast Friends: The two met just last Tuesday at My Friend's Place in Hollywood, the program's executive director told The New York Times, when Cyrus visited the center. My Friend's Place helps homeless youth secure housing, employment, education, and health coverage.

Less than a week later, Helt was in front of a national television audience making a heartfelt plea. "I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost, and scared for their lives right now," he said. "The music industry will make over $7 billion this year, and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no place to call home."

As Cyrus watched in tears from the audience, Jesse directed viewers to the "Wrecking Ball" singer's Facebook page for information on helping combat the homelessness epidemic.

Those who donate before Sept. 21 will be entered into a contest to see Cyrus's Bangerz tour stop in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 28. As of Monday afternoon, Miley's initiative had raised $200,000.

3. Miley's Statement Was an About-Face: The backlash Cyrus received after her raunchy performance at last year's VMAs inspired her to focus some attention on positivity. "I know I needed to, after last year, to remember what matters," she told Ryan Seacrest on his syndicated radio show Monday. Cyrus realized that she should use her platform to make a difference. "There's going to be talk, so what do I want them to talk about?" she explained. "If I'm going to be given this loud of a voice and this big of an image and this big of a platform and this huge of an opportunity to talk to young people in America right now, what am I really trying to say? Because I don't think what I was trying to say is what happened the year before."

4. She Took Inspiration From a Hollywood Icon: Cyrus took a cue from Marlon Brando's famous Academy Awards statement, when he won for Best Actor for The Godfather, her publicist told the Times. Back in 1973, no-show Brando asked activist Sacheen Littlefeather to deliver a speech on his behalf, as a protest against Hollywood's treatment of Native Americans. While Brando actually refused his Oscar, Cyrus did accept her Moonman… but she told Seacrest that Helt will be keeping the trophy.
